Kitchen

Small but perfectly proportioned for the efficient cook, this little kitchen is replete with custom features and design elements usually reserved for large expensive homes.

Foremost among the one-of-a-kind features is the custom cabinetry, designed and handcrafted to precisely fit both the uniquely configured space as well as the old-house-loving bent of the owners.

The upper cabinets feature graceful curves while the apparent "feet" on the lower cabinets give them the look of antique standalone furniture. (There is a modern toe-kick on the lower cabinets but it is painted a dark color to make it recede from view.) Rounding out this suite of cabinets is a custom range hood designed to blend with the old-house theme.

To make this new kitchen feel even more like an old cottage, the cabinets were first painted, then sanded and varnished, to give them a worn and weathered look. The effect is further strengthened by the use of old-fashioned surface-mount hinges, cabinet latches, and bin pulls, all finished in beautiful oil-rubbed bronze.

Wondering about the festive hue selected for the cabinets? It was inspired by an antique Japanese glass float, a whimsical seafoam green that also sets the tone for the glass-tiled backsplash on the kitchen counters and over the propane range. Along with the pine ceiling and floors, beautiful solid-maple countertops warm up this little kitchen while toning down the painted cabinets, striking just the right balance of bright color and darker wood tones.

Among the many additional features to notice in this kitchen is the authentic nautical lighting in heavy solid brass, which is used not only in this room but throughout the cottage. A skylight, trimmed in pine to match the ceiling, and walls painted a warm golden hue make this a bright and sunny space for the cook to enjoy. And a custom-designed solid-maple corner spice rack makes smart use of the limited space in this little galley. Finally, a porcelain double sink fitted with an antique-reproduction faucet in oil-rubbed bronze completes the look.
