Exterior

Craftsman architecture of the early twentieth century is classic, ubiquitous, and loved by virtually everyone, including us, and is a perfect fit for this seaside cottage.

In this case, however, its familiar components are scaled down somewhat to more appropriately fit the smaller proportions of the structure while still managing to convey the substance and heft so characteristic of the style.

Authentic Craftsman detailing can be seen in the porch columns, deep roof overhangs, beaded-board soffit, and exposed rafter tails. The shingled front-facing gable, classic knee braces, and arched apron front over the porch are also hallmarks of the Craftsman style.

Another great feature of this little cottage is the pleasing blend of hand-stained cedar siding with a color scheme comprised of three historic hues on the painted surfaces.

And the paver-lined patio and large stackstone fire pit provide a wonderful venue for al fresco entertaining.

To the left of the original front porch is the new main entry, which opens onto the main sitting room of the cottage through a single French door. (With the old front door no longer used for primary access, a cedar rocker and Adirondack chair now populate the porch.) As can be seen in these exterior photos, the main room is actually a delightful sunroom. The floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides flood the interior with warm natural light while opening it up to the beautiful and breathtaking saltwater views.
